Most good ironing boards last for decades, if not a lifetime. However, ironing board covers need to be replaced every few years. When looking for a new cover, there are a few things that shoppers need to keep in mind. The following information should ensure that the cover purchased fits all of the needs of the shopper.

Reflective Surfaces

The best covers have reflective surfaces. The reason this is important is because it helps reflect the heat of the iron away from the ironing board itself and back onto the garments. This ensures that less heat and energy is lost when ironing. This feature alone speeds up the entire ironing process. Additionally, it allows the user to turn down the heat of the iron, which means clothing is less likely to become ruined.

Cotton Covers

Natural cotton covers are a great choice because cotton helps create a no-slip surface for your clothing with the friction between the two fabrics. It should also be noted that cotton is extremely durable and machine washable. When choosing a cotton cover, be sure that the underside of the cover has a reflective backing. This gives users the best of both worlds.

A good ironing board cover should have padding. The thickness of the padding within a cover varies between 4 and 8 millimeters. One of the great things about padding is that it provides a strong but smooth surface when ironing. This makes it extremely easy to run the iron along fabric. The thickness doesn't really matter, as long as it's plush enough that the mesh marks from the ironing board don't show up on the clothing.

Good Fastener

The last thing to consider is the type of fastener that the cover uses. There are usually two choices: drawstring and bungee. Both work fairly well, but most modern manufactures have switched over to using bungee fasteners. Either choice has its advantages. For example, the elastic around the edge of bungee covers makes them easy to put on and remove. Drawstring covers are harder to put on and remove, but they hold in place better. Shoppers should choose the covers that best fits their individual needs.
